An Arizona nurse was ensnared in a scandal after her ex-boyfriend tipped off authorities to fraud in the state’s healthcare and private school voucher system. Michelle Dils, 44, of Phoenix, stands accused of swindling over $129,000 in taxpayer dollars through a crafty deception involving her son's purported medical and educational needs. Dils, who vehemently denies the allegations, found herself at the heart of a scheme where it is claimed she and two accomplices billed for "bogus services."
The ex-boyfriend alleged Dils requested his help to "pretend to provide educational services" for her son. The ensuing investigation led to a July indictment that has also implicated Angela Lee Turner and Sarah Gretchen Ishler in the alleged scam. As the case unfolds, court records from the indictment reveal 25 counts of theft, fraud, and illegal control of an enterprise between the women spanning 2017 to 2022, according to 12News.
The charges hinge upon suspicion that Dils and her associates manipulated both the Empowerment Scholarship Accounts (ESA) fund and Arizona’s Medicaid agency, AHCCCS, by fabricating records. Notably, there seems to be a question mark hovering over the teen's actual disability status; the young man is noted in social media to be the lead singer in a punk rock band, apparently contradicting the need for high-level care he was billed for. Former Arizona Department of Health Services Director Will Humble said, "If someone can function at that level, that's totally inconsistent with the state criteria for qualifying for 24/7 care. Someone gamed the system to get this, no doubt about it," as reported by 12News.
As the educational and healthcare communities reel from the allegations, state officials promise to clamp down on wasteful misappropriations. State Superintendent Tom Horne asserted, "I am determined that every single expenditure will be a valid educational expense," after revealing significant actions taken by his department including the rejection of 1,200 ESA reimbursement requests last fall. Together, these efforts are designed to staunchly guard taxpayer dollars against such fraudulent activities, ensuring that funds genuinely attend to those with legitimate needs.
