As February rolls in, so does the familiar cacophony of decorated shopping carts and costumes in downtown Phoenix. The AZ Cacophony Society has announced that the Phoenix Idiotarod race will be making its mark again on Saturday, February 24, encouraging up to 36 whimsically-attired teams to fiercely compete, partake in a bit of mayhem, and enjoy the local bar scene. The peculiar event mandates a $50 entry fee per team, with profits partially benefiting a still unnamed local charity, according to a recent report by Phoenix New Times.
The Idiotarod has become a staple of Phoenix's vibrant events, absent only in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Teams are required to creatively modify a shopping cart, dash around downtown Phoenix's barricades, and show off at various checkpoints. "Sabotage, costume, and presentation are rewarded," stresses the AZ Cacophony Society's website. This year's competition quickly approaches, and those interested will have to rush to assemble a team and register before the clock strikes the deadline on February 18, the same report noted.
While some may hesitate to refer to it as high culture, the Idiotarod race has gathered a following for its quirky blend of athleticism and theatricality. Previous races have seen participants dressed as LEGO figurines, "South Park" characters, and in a homage to the eccentric personalities of David Bowie and others. The AZ Cacophony Society remains ever-evasive about the starting location, divulging those details only to registered racers as the event nears, mirrored a similar announcement covered by Phoenix New Times for last year's event.
The race's blend of chaos and community service has proven to be a winning recipe for the nonprofit organizing it. Participants must be at least 21 years old to join, making every pit stop at the downtown bars just another leg of this carefree competition. To absolutely participate, organizers suggest submitting your registration posthaste, as available slots are likely to disappear faster than a cold beer on a hot Phoenix day.
