Two Pima County sheriff's deputies were shot and wounded in a confrontation that broke out during a domestic dispute in Casas Adobes. The incident occurred near Overton Road and Kanawha Street, with authorities responding to a 911 call about an attempted child custody interference, according to a report from 12News.
A person, who identified themselves as the child's grandfather, conveyed to 911 operators, "We have a problem, he tried to take the kid. He is trying to say he has the paperwork, and the mother is not here, I'm the grandfather and we are not going to let him take the kid." Responding to the grandparents' plea, deputies Jaylon McEuen and Leonardo Wells were dispatched to restore order but found themselves entangled in violence instead.
29-year-old Jordyn Guadalupe Sanchez, who did not have legal custody of the child, attempted to leave with the youngster when approached by law enforcement. This escalated to a violent physical confrontation, with Sanchez and the deputies grappling on the ground, body camera footage shared by Pima County officials showed. Amidst the struggle, gunfire rang out, though it's unclear who fired first, based on video evidence shared by 12News.
In the midst of the chaos, a deputy's voice was heard frantically exclaiming, "I've been shot!" over the radio as the incident unfurled. Sanchez managed to flee but was eventually captured nearby, as per Pima County officials. Fortunately, the injuries sustained by the deputies were not life-threatening, a source from the Pima County Sheriff's Office told KVOA. Sanchez, shot in the leg during the altercation, was also treated for his injuries before being booked into jail.
Sanchez now faces serious charges including attempted murder, felony endangerment, and custodial interference. Meanwhile, deputies McEuen and Wells have been released from the hospital, now recovering at home. The shooting is under scrutiny by the Pima Regional Critical Incident Team, responsible for overseeing the criminal investigation into the eventful night.
