In what has become a curious annual blip on the radar for marine enthusiasts, Chief Flynn—an individual previously reported to indulge in nautical escapades to Gobbler's Knob on Groundhog Day—was, in fact, found firmly anchored at his work desk this February 2nd. The Plymouth Police Department's Facebook page carried the whimsical claim that Flynn, presumed to be a seafarer itching to launch his vessel, was relying on Punxsutawney Phil's shadow—or lack thereof—to prepone his maritime excursions.
As entertaining as the notion may seem, it turns out that the seafaring dreams attributed to Chief Flynn were nothing but mist on the water. "Chief Flynn was at his desk bright and early this morning," as stated on a Facebook post, waving away any fog of misinformation regarding his supposed pilgrimage to Gobbler's Knob. Additionally, in a turn that might ruffle the fur of groundhog enthusiasts everywhere, the initial claim mistakenly referred to the celebrated critter Phil as "a large woodchuck," an error that has since been corrected with a nod to biological accuracy.
A picture sent purportedly by Chief Flynn turned out to be a humorous meme stating, "Chief Flynn has no idea how to make a meme."
Touching on the heart of the Groundhog Day tradition, Phil did not see his shadow this year, prompting speculation of an early spring—a particularly titillating piece of folklore for boat enthusiasts eager to set sail. It should be noted, however, that neither the shadowy lore of Groundhog Day nor the sun's position in the sky has any sway over the official schedule at the marina or the actual weather to come. Nevertheless, whoever crafted the Plymouth Police Department's post had a keen sense of humor, even if their nautical know-how was a bit adrift.
