Portland is on high alert as retail thefts skyrocket, despite significant strides made against car theft, Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt reported during a Monday news conference. Schmidt, flanked by leading law enforcement officials from the Portland area, provided updates on the dual task forces aimed at curbing auto theft and organized retail theft. In a promising turn for car owners, auto thefts plunged by 26% from 2022, with Kias and Hyundais frequently targeted, according to KATU. However, retail establishments are still grappling with a nearly 88% surge in shoplifting offenses in the same comparison period.

While the DA’s office brandishes record prosecutions of the suspected thieves, Portland Police continue apprehending car theft suspects, as KPTV noted. Portland Police Chief Bob Day, when tasked with heading off these crimes, remarked, "What I’m hoping to see is some of these larger scale investigations, right?" He highlighted the organized nature of retail theft, pushing for both extensive and termed investigations. Often these thefts are not the work of one-off shoplifters, but organized groups, as Day revealed in a statement obtained by KATU.

Further abating concerns, District Attorney Schmidt touted the county’s task force effectiveness, citing the apprehension of "truly prolific offenders". For instance, one indicted suspect helming a Tesla theft ring confessed to stealing 11 Teslas in just two days and is linked to over 160 vehicle thefts in recent years, as reported by KOIN.

Created in May 2023, the two Special units are now spearheading the county's pushback against the tide of escalating car and retail thefts, with the District Attorney's Office credited with homing in on prosecuting these crimes to greater effect. "These are truly prolific offenders that were taken off the streets," Schmidt told KOIN. Despite the ongoing battle, the message from Portland's law enforcement is clear: both small-time crooks and organized rings are in their sights, with a focus on recovery of stolen goods and the disruptions of criminal enterprises.
