Over the weekend, the Portland Police Bureau (PPB) and Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) joined forces in a retail theft clampdown, which saw 21 arrests and the recovery of two stolen vehicles among other substances. During the crackdown on Sunday, officers encountered dangerous high-speed chases involving two individuals who attempted to evade the law at perilous speeds.
The most notable pursuit involved an Audi sedan, reported stolen from Hillsboro, which wove a path of mayhem, beginning from Southeast 113th Avenue and Southeast Stark Street before ending at Southeast 21st Avenue and Southeast Yamhill Street. Officers, valuing public safety above all, ceased the car chase and handed over to the PPB's Air Support Unit (ASU), which tracked the suspects from a safe distance. The two passengers, jumping out of the vehicle, incited a foot chase that culminated in a forced entry into a vacant home. Assisted by Central Precinct officers and a K9 unit, the suspects were eventually apprehended, hiding in the basement.
Austin L. Denison, 29, of Sherwood, Oregon, and Shelby B. Steelman, 28, of Hillsboro, Oregon were among the four detained. They are now facing serious charges, with Denison booked on allegations including Unlawful Use of a Motor Vehicle, Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, and multiple counts of Recklessly Endangering another Person. Steelman was booked for Unlawful Use of a Motor Vehicle and Burglary in the First Degree, among others. The concise report of the event provides a glimpse into the hazards that officers encounter when deterring crime.
These operations are a showcase of the strategic coordination between different agencies, a synergy aimed at maintaining public safety and reducing rampant criminal activity. The results were substantial, with a total tally of 21 arrests, over 30 criminal charges, and significant quantities of illegal drugs like fentanyl and methamphetamine seized. The mission’s stats, including the confiscation of an Audi and a Hyundai—collectively valued at $38,000.
Further details including a video of the incident and images of the recovered goods have been made public on the Portland Police Bureau's official website, with photos depicting the pinned suspect vehicle, the dismantled Hyundai, and snapshots of officers arresting theft suspects.
