A 48-year-old Sacramento man found himself in hot water in Colma after police say he bolted from a shopping center emergency exit with a bag full of stolen goods. The alleged shoplifting sprinter turned fugitive was apprehended after a brief chase through a nearby cemetery, the Colma Police Department reported.
The chase unfolded last Wednesday around 2:44 pm when a Colma officer while doing a routine check at a mall located on the 200 block of Colma Boulevard, noticed the man hustling out of the back exit with evidently ill-gotten gains; the officer's directive to halt went ignored, initiating a foot race that ended shortly after that with the suspect nabbed, the property—totaling about $235.09 in value—recovered.
Officials stated that the suspect confessed to the theft and acknowledged his attempt to evade law enforcement by taking flight. Following his capture, the man was slapped with charges of resisting arrest and possession of stolen property. A statement posted on Facebook by the Colma Police Department detailed the arrest and subsequent citation, which included a court appearance promise made by the accused.
Instead of keeping him behind bars, authorities cut the suspect loose on his recognizance, waiting for his day in court. Police have withheld the man's identity.
