In San Antonio, Texas, a couple is turning their personal struggles into a source of healing for others. Angela and Roger Rodkey, themselves impacted by the ravages of PTSD, have embarked on a mission to provide service dogs to veterans and first responders through their organization, Veteran Frenchies. "Life is precious. Tomorrow is not guaranteed," Roger, a first responder, told KENS 5.
Statistics show that PTSD affects one in three first responders and seven percent of veterans. The Rodkeys, understanding this plight firsthand, have used their love for dogs as a bridge to recovery for afflicted individuals. They have witnessed successes like that of Joel Hicks, a former Air Force medic, whose service dog Harley helped him navigate through the aftermath of intense trauma. "He also knew when my blood pressure was getting high, or he knew when my sugar would get low," Hicks revealed in a statement on KENS5.
In a similar vein, Helping Paws, an organization in Minnesota, outlines clear criteria for those eligible to receive a service dog, including honorably discharged veterans with combat experience, first responders with a work-related disability, and the financial means to maintain a dog's well-being. Applicants must undergo a comprehensive application process, which includes submitting several forms of documentation and completing a personal interview. Details of the eligibility requirements are outlined on their website.
After losing his treasured Harley, Hicks found solace in Deuce, a new service dog gifted by veteran Frenchies. "It's like that one movie where the dog jumps from one dog to another. The dog's purpose—that's how I feel about this," he expressed on KENS5.
For those interested in supporting Veteran Frenchies or seeking the companionship of a service dog, the Rodkeys encourage engagement through their Facebook page or website. As Roger Rodkey poignantly puts it, making a difference "one veteran, one first responder at a time" is the goal that continues to drive their purposeful endeavor.
