An elderly San Antonio woman died after her son accidentally shot her through a wall in their home early Monday morning, according to local authorities. San Antonio Police Department reported to the 900 block of Ripford Street near Highway 90 following a call about a shooting around 12:26 a.m.
Upon their arrival, the officers discovered the 80-year-old victim with a fatal chest wound. The woman's son, a man in his 60s, told police he retrieved his gun after hearing a noise in the backyard, during which the firearm accidentally discharged, shooting through the wall and striking his mother, KENS 5 reported.
The Emergency Medical Services attempted life-saving measures, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Meanwhile, the SAPD Homicide Unit is investigating the incident, but what charges the son may face remains undetermined at this time.
No other individuals were reported injured during the incident. The son's identity has not been released, neither has the nature of the noise he claimed to have heard, that prompted him to arm himself. A saddened community is left grappling with the weight of a tragedy that repeats itself with alarming frequency, the confluence of domestic routines and lethal weapons.
