A San Antonio man faces charges in a horrific case of child abuse that left a 2-year-old girl dead. Mark Anthony Chavez, 29, was arrested and charged February 9 with causing serious bodily injury to a child through recklessness, authorities said.
The tragic incident unfolded on June 21, 2023, when the victim, a toddler, was admitted to the hospital unresponsive and was pronounced dead shortly thereafter, Fox San Antonio reports. Chavez, who was looking after the child, initially claimed she had sustained a head injury after hitting a windowsill and then became ill and fractious, adding that on the following day she hit her head once again while playing, according to the arrest report; however, an autopsy later ruled the cause of death as high-impact trauma, consistent with child abuse.
Details of the abuse and subsequent investigation into Chavez's involvement were sparse, but the autopsy's findings pointed toward a violent end for the young girl, contrasting sharply with Chavez's account to investigators.
Chavez remains in custody, police have not disclosed whether he has obtained legal representation or when he is due in court, while the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the toddler's death continues to unfold with grim implications, said authorities.
