Gen Z is high-tailing it to Texas, with San Antonio at the epicenter of the migration, becoming the state's most popular city for young movers in 2022. Zillow Group's analysis, citing the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey, reveals that Texas, with its allure of job opportunities and affordable living, attracted about 76,000 Gen Zers born between 1996 and 2004, according to a report from KENS5.

Texas racked up 473,453 new residents across all age groups last year, Ashley Massey, a real estate advisor and author, expressed optimism about Texas' growing appeal, touting its major cities as magnets for newcomers seeking economic benefits and reprieve from extreme weather, and despite the boom Massey said the state is far from reaching its peak in population growth as it's still calling more people in with the promise of tax savings. In the fierce competition among Texan cities, San Antonio took the crown by adding nearly 19,000 Gen Zers, leaving Houston trailing with roughly 11,000, as per Massey's interview with KENS5.

However, such growth is not without its side effects, especially on infrastructure, as highlighted by TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams' grim forecast at a recent transportation summit reported by KXAN. Williams remarked that the work on the critical I-35 highway, which connects the exploding populations of Austin and San Antonio, "will never conclude"; vouched for the expansion of transportation infrastructure, crucial to matching the area's vigorous economic and demographic expansion.

Balancing the excitement of progress, John Hardy, a local business owner, voiced his concerns over the congestion this surge has brought their main issue isn't the growth but how it's slowing them down with traffic snarls stretching the time it takes to reach customers, Hardy told KXAN, recounting how transportation hiccups caused delays even to the day's event, and Hardy's hope hinges on the expansion of I-35 which could potentially ease the traffic burdens, paving the way for smoother operations in the booming region.
