In a verdict that's bound to stir controversy, an Army veteran Roger Lee-Canada McCracken, was cleared of murder charges in the shooting death of his neighbor Ronnie Riddle, as reported by Fox San Antonio. The incident which took place in September 2021 was ruled as self-defense by a San Antonio jury, despite McCracken firing a total of 12 bullets during the fatal encounter.
McCracken's trial centered around the deadly confrontation outside Pecan Valley Golf Apartments, the jury was told of an escalating dispute where McCracken and his wife had previously reported Riddle for suspected domestic violence, tensions were already high and the courtroom heard dramatic testimonies from the evening in question when McCracken acted after perceiving a threat posed by Riddle near his family, this sequence of events led to McCracken firing on Riddle who was said to have reached for a weapon. The San Antonio Express-News reported that prosecutors argued the shooting was excessive, especially considering Riddle had been hit twice and was fleeing when McCracken continued to shoot.
During the trial, defense attorney Joseph Hoelscher painted a scene of a family man pushed to the brink, "They go to play games with their son and two girls, then they come back. Roger puts down (the car window) and the voice of Ronnie Riddle is yelling and cursing," arguing that McCracken's actions were a response to an imminent threat to his family. Despite the prosecution's argument that the number of shots fired was not reasonable, the defense maintained that it was a matter of life and death, with McCracken having to make a split-second decision in the face of danger.
After hours of deliberation and being temporarily deadlocked, the jury returned with a not guilty verdict which led to visible reactions from both sides; supporters of the Riddle family exiting in anger and McCracken's family and friends forming a circle to pray in relief of the decision a stark contrast to the earlier tension witnessed.
