
A high-speed pursuit involving San Marcos and New Braunfels police departments ended in tragedy after a stolen vehicle chase resulted in a juvenile suspect dying from a fall at a rock quarry in Comal County. KENS5 reported that early Tuesday morning San Marcos police identified a Hyundai they believed to be stolen with two juvenile suspects from San Antonio inside, prompting the chase which later involved New Braunfels police after crossing city limits.
The chase ensued on the southbound lanes of Interstate 35 before the suspect vehicle left the road, barreled down a gravel path and finally collided with a boulder within the quarry, this is according to a statement obtained by KENS5; thereafter, both suspects fled the vehicle, the passenger met a fatal end after tumbling roughly 70 feet into an open quarry pit, the driver was subsequently detained by New Braunfels police with authorities expecting to lay multiple charges including unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and evading arrest.
During the crash investigation, items were unearthed from the vehicle including three stolen firearms and two pieces of body armor, KXAN reported, also indicating the suspects had allegedly committed burglary in San Marcos prior to the incident. The identity of the deceased has not been released while multiple agencies, including the Texas Rangers and San Marcos Police, are currently investigating the complex circumstances surrounding this fatal event.
There's a community grappling with the aftermath as agencies aim to piece together the events that led up to such a fatal conclusion, the juvenile has yet to be formally accused as the investigation is ongoing, however, charges related to burglary and the possession of stolen goods are anticipated to be among those filed. The San Marcos Police Department has not yet finalized their assessments of the incident or released further specifics pertaining to the underage suspects involved, according to KENS5.
