The WM Phoenix Open, known for its lively atmosphere, saw a significant surge in crackdowns this past weekend, with Scottsdale police reporting a notable increase in arrests, ejections, and trespassing compared to the previous years' events. Officers responded to 653 calls for service, arrested 54 individuals, ejected 211, and encountered 73 instances of trespassing, overshadowing the figures from both 2022 and 2023, according to ABC15.
These statistics starkly contrast the past, as the 2023 event saw only 18 arrests and 102 ejections, meanwhile, 2022 didn't witness a single arrest, with a mere 90 ejections, the uptick in enforcement raises questions about the factors influencing fan behavior and police response. Adding to the fray, 12News reports a number of those present at the event were tossed out for a mishmash of reasons, including flouting liquor laws and breaching guidelines set forth by the PGA regarding spectator conduct.
The Open, which enjoys a reputation as the PGA tour's most boisterous tournament, was marred by instances where passionate fans crossed the line, inciting frustration among golfers like Zach Johnson and Billy Horschel who were caught having heated encounters with fans in videos shared across social media platforms, as reported by 12News.
Amidst the flurry of excitement and disorder, Scottsdale police have indicated the anticipation of releasing a more comprehensive stat sheet on the event come Tuesday, as fan behavior and law enforcement's role in such highly-attended gatherings continue to be the subject of scrutiny and debate.
