Seattle's push for climate justice within its transportation sector is picking up speed, according to a recent report detailing the strides made since Mayor Bruce Harrell signed an executive order a year ago. Harrell's ambitious plan to cut greenhouse gas emissions includes 23 specific actions, with seven now complete and 15 others underway after significant headway in 2023, as Greenspace Seattle reports.

Noteworthy achievements from the past year saw the City, partnering with C40 Cities, focusing on zero-emissions freight with the completion of a C40 Zero Emission Freight report in March. Crafted in partnership with mayors worldwide confronting climate change, the report shapes the city's upcoming legislation and creation of an advisory group comprising urban goods delivery freight companies. Laid out in the report are recommendations for a future where Seattle streets might see more e-cargo bike deliveries happening.

Another key development, the Climate Change Response Framework, has been enacted as the cornerstone of Harrell's vision for a greener transit system in the city. According to the same Greenspace Seattle article, it lays out an innovative approach designed to offer Seattleites a smorgasbord of zero-emission transport options ideally suited for efficient, shared, and sustainable travel. Mayor Harrell is doubling down on efforts to give all city dwellers equitably a taste of what a reduced carbon footprint could feel like.

In a move that engaged the younger demographic directly, the Youth Transportation and Climate Summit was a fixture in December where over 60 participants contributed to the Youth Climate & Transportation Action Plan. This summit captured the changed transit experiences of Seattle's youth during the pandemic, informing Mayor Harrell's efforts to leverage state efforts on free youth transit.

With the city-centered focus on electric vehicles (EV), Seattle City Light spearheaded an initiative alongside other departmental teams to iron out the kinks for a smoother EV charging station roll-out. They're underpinning the fight against climate change with a completed report that provides actionable recommendations. Despite its EV ambitions, the report by the City also highlighted a critical issue in the rise of pedestrian accidents and issued a call to arms with a dozen safety recommendations intended to undermine the upward trend of street casualties.

Lastly, the Vision Zero Program underwent a critical review, pinpointing reasons behind a troubling increase in pedestrian accidents while identifying opportunities for improved pedestrian safety. This top-to-bottom examination offered insights into the disturbing rise in severe injuries and deaths on Seattle's streets and arrived at 12 recommendations focused on fostering a culture of care and respect for all commuters.
