Chaos rippled through Elk Grove Village this morning after a shooting on Route 53 prompted a flurry of police activity and significant traffic delays. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, state troopers swarmed the area around 6:15 a.m. in response to reports of gunfire in the northbound lanes near Biesterfield Road.
Having occurred around 6 a.m., the incident led to the closure of westbound lanes on Interstate 290, stalling traffic near the 390 exchange as remarked by FOX 32 Chicago. Motorists found themselves caught in the snarl as state police closed off access to the interstate from the Byrne Interchange to Route 390 while they combed the scene.
The roadblocks caused by the investigative response were temporary but impactful. The Illinois State Police dictated the rhythm of reopening, first by clearing lanes on Interstate 290 near Interstate 390; they had been shut down at approximately 8 a.m. but were flowing again a mere 40 minutes later, the Sun-Times reported.
