
A tragic incident unfolded on a Southeast Portland street earlier this month, leaving a community mourning the loss of one of their own. Thomas Amato, a 71-year-old Portland resident, was killed when he was hit by a vehicle while walking along Woodstock Boulevard. According to the Portland Police Bureau, his family has been notified of the heartbreaking event.
The collision occurred on the evening of February 4. Police received calls around 5:44 p.m. about a pedestrian-involved crash and promptly dispatched officers from the East Precinct to the 9700 block of Southeast Woodstock Boulevard, The driver, whose identity has not been disclosed by authorities, was present when officers arrived and is said to be cooperating with the ongoing investigation, authorities reported.
In the wake of the collision, the Major Crash Team was called to spearhead the investigation into what transpired, leading to the closure of a segment of Woodstock Boulevard extending from Southeast 97th Avenue to Southeast 101st Avenue. This stretch of road was inaccessible for several hours as the team meticulously processed the scene and collected evidence deemed critical to understanding the circumstances surrounding Amato’s untimely death.
While the investigation continues, details regarding the cause of the crash or potential charges have not been publicly shared.
