In a substantial bust, Springfield police seized an arsenal including two machine guns and a multitude of other illegal weapons on Friday evening. The cache, uncovered in a home on Plainfield Street, highlights a persistent problem of firearm trafficking plaguing communities. According to the Springfield Police Department, the operation was carried out by the Firearms Investigation Unit (FIU), the Emergency Services Unit (ESU), and the Springfield Police C3 North End Unit, resulting in the arrest of three individuals.
Springfield's FIU detectives received a tip that 18-year-old Jemsen Ortiz was in possession of a particularly dangerous modification: a Glock switch, which effectively turns a semi-automatic firearm into a machine gun. Acting on this intelligence, and after acquiring a search warrant, they raided Ortiz's residence. During the course of the search, officers discovered five illegal firearms, eight sear-selector switches, and large-capacity magazines alongside cocaine and other drugs, cash, and rounds of ammunition.
The confiscated items paint a stark picture of readiness to commit violence, including two machine guns with rounds loaded and eight standalone sear-selector switches. Additionally, the Springfield officers uncovered multiple high-capacity magazines, some loaded with up to 31 rounds of ammo. The operation also led to the seizure of narcotics, with officers recovering a sizable amount of cocaine and various bags of marijuana.
Three residents were arrested in the raid, with Ortiz, and 41-year-old Angel Vazquez, both facing several charges related to firearms, ammunition, drug trafficking, and conspiracy. Eduardo Clavijo, 21, faces similar firearms charges. A breakdown of the charges indicates a severe breach of gun laws including possession of a machine gun, lack of a Firearm Identification Card, possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number, among others. Drugs charges added to the slate, with trafficking cocaine and intent to distribute layered on top.
The Springfield Police Department's successful operation underscores the ongoing collaborative work necessary to tackle violent crime and gun trafficking.
