An officer-involved shooting in downtown Atlanta left a suspect injured after a confrontation during a reported vehicle break-in. Authorities with the Atlanta Police Department said that a sergeant, while on patrol near Forsyth Street and Brotherton Street SW yesterday night, encountered a man allegedly in the act of breaking into a car.

Around 8 p.m, the unnamed sergeant happened to come upon a vehicle with its window shattered and subsequently observed a man, later identified as 31-year-old Antonio Carter, inside the vehicle. According to a statement obtained by FOX5 Atlanta, APD Major Peter Malecki narrated, "The sergeant came across a vehicle parked on the side of the road. It appears that the sergeant came across an active vehicle break-in in progress." Investigators claim to have found a gun at the scene that is believed to belong to Carter.

The encounter quickly escalated, and the sergeant discharged his firearm, striking Carter in the face. The wounded man was apprehended and taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for medical care, where he is expected to recover. The officer involved was unharmed during the incident.

Following the shooting, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) was tapped to thoroughly, yet swift to investigate the series of events that led to the officer firing his weapon. This incident marks the seventh officer-involved shooting in 2024 the GBI is probing. Despite the disturbance, services at the nearby Greyhound Bus and Garnett MARTA stations were reportedly unaffected.

In their coverage of the same event, Channel 2 Action News confirmed that the GBI is actively conducting an investigation, but further details on the circumstances surrounding the incident have yet to be released. Neither the identity of the sergeant nor additional background information on the suspect has been provided at this time.
