Stephen Clare, the 50-year-old man charged with the gruesome murder of his baby daughter and the shooting of his ex-wife, will face the judge again today for a status hearing. This court session, starting at 9 a.m aims to update all parties on the progress of the case and discuss any potential plea deals, as indicated by reports from KENS 5.
It has been nearly a year since Clare's alleged violent outbreak in April 2023, when he stabbed his daughters leaving Willow Clare, his 11-month-old, dead and injured the baby's sister, alongside attacking his ex-wife. The hearing today reopens wounds that the community and the family, struggling to comprehend the reason behind such violence, are still nursing—a year hasn't been enough to understand or to heal from the horrors that unfolded.
Since the indictment by a grand jury in June, Clare has been confined to a cell, denied bail. KENS 5 noted that, if found guilty of the charges leveled against him, which include capital murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, he might face the death penalty. However, there's yet no word from the Bexar County District Attorney on whether the prosecution will call for such a sentence.
The complexity of the case prompted the court to delay the trial start date to January 8, as more time was needed for discovery, namely the gathering of crucial evidence, and the procurement of additional records judge deemed necessary to proceed—the wheels of justice, slow as they may sometimes turn, grind on in an effort to deliver an outcome that can stand before the law and before the people it seeks to serve. Clare has pleaded not guilty to all charges and remains in custody, with the truth of that fateful day yet to be fully unveiled.
