Authorities swooped in on a suspected gunman at Logan Airport, clamping down on the man accused of shooting a New Bedford Police Detective in the face last year. The arrest was made public by the Massachusetts State Police through a detailed account of the collar.
The suspect, 18-year-old Denzel Gomes, was nabbed by a task force comprised of local, state, and federal agencies as he stepped off a flight from abroad. Gomes, who faced no hurdles during the apprehension, was outfitted in handcuffs emblazoned with the New Bedford Police Department's colors. The coordinated arrest was not just a display of investigative tenacity but also symbolized a small measure of closure for a shaken law enforcement community.
"GOMES will be arraigned at Bristol Superior Court tomorrow," authorities announced after his arrest on February 14th.
On July 17, 2023, the unnamed detective was carrying out surveillance work when bullets flew from a car, leaving him with critical injuries that he would, fortunately, survive. Another individual at the scene wasn't as fortunate, suffering a gunshot wound to the foot.
As the investigation unfolded, the New Bedford Police Major Crimes Unit, alongside the Massachusetts State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section and additional state and federal partners, labored ceaselessly to apprehend those responsibly. A total of three individuals were involved, with Gomes pinned as the alleged triggerman—a charge that, if proven, carries with it the weight of conscious malevolence and grave legal consequences. The grand jury indictment includes seven counts against Gomes, which notably feature two counts of armed assault with intent to murder among other serious charges.
The manhunt for Gomes spanned an international breadth after leads suggested he had fled the country. A collective of enforcement agencies kept an eye on Gomes' movements abroad. Upon receiving a tip-off that Gomes was en route back to the U.S., a welcoming committee that would seal his fate was arranged at Logan's Terminal E. Without fanfare or incident, Gomes was taken back on American soil.
