In a crucial move to ramp up heart health safety, particularly for the elderly, experts are pushing for increased awareness of stroke signs as part of the Heart Health Awareness Month. According to KEN5, Dr. Kenneth Adams, Medicare Texas Chief Medical Officer, underscored the heightened risk of heart disease and strokes among the aging population, which are, notably, the leading causes of death in the U.S.
Dr. Adams emphasized the importance of the acronym FAST, a quick guide to recognizing stroke symptoms. This includes checking for facial drooping, arm weakness, speech difficulties, and understanding that time is critical. These preventive measures are especially vital for seniors living alone who may not notice symptoms like slurred speech, "They may not speak to anybody that day or speak on the phone, so they might not even realize their own speech is slurred", Dr. Adams told KENS5.
Simultaneously, South Australia’s Health and Wellbeing Strategy 2020 – 2025 is elevating its focus on prevention and early intervention, aimed at reducing hospital interactions and bolstering public health and community services. The long-term plan, detailed by SA Health, aims to enhance service capacity outside hospital settings, and bring innovative health system solutions to the residents.
The strategy has been shaped by deep-dive analysis and broad consultation that received "just under 200 completed surveys and feedback forms", as per the summary provided by SA Health. It's poised to incorporate technology and research in its execution and anticipates swift training and support for the workforce to meet the evolving needs of a diverse population. Despite the ambitious scope of the strategy, flexibility remains a core commitment, ensuring the plan’s adaptability over time.
