A tragic incident unfolded early Sunday in Taylor when a woman driving the wrong way on a major road crashed head-on into an oncoming vehicle. The woman, a 32-year-old from Taylor who was also a mother of a young child, perished in the collision on Telegraph Road. The Local 4 News report identified the woman as a mother who had been out with friends prior to the accident.
The crash occurred near Schomberg Street around 4:30 a.m., with several 911 calls reporting a white SUV, later identified as a 2010 Land Rover LR2, traveling south in the northbound lanes. The distraught driver collided with a 40-year-old Southfield man driving a 2022 Dodge Ram, according to authorities. The Detroit News confirmed the man was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. His condition, however, has not been updated since the incident.
Witnesses described harrowing scenes to Taylor police, as reported by The Detroit News. One driver even followed the wrong-way driver for miles, attempting to get her attention and prevent the impending disaster. "Jesus, it’s a bad accident," exclaimed an unnamed caller, witnessing the aftermath of the deadly collision.
Taylor police officer Anthony Borg described the night's events in a statement obtained by ClickOnDetroit: "I was notified by my lieutenant of a serious accident on Telegraph Road just off of Schomberg that came in as a wrong-way driver on Telegraph." Authorities have not released the names of either driver as the investigation continues, but they did confirm that a toxicology report is being processed to determine if alcohol, drugs, or a medical condition played a role in the fatal judgement lapse.
The surviving driver's vehicle was severely damaged as a result, with the front end of the vehicle crumpled. Pieces of the automobile were scattered across the roadway, painting a vivid picture of the violent impact. The News-Herald added that the at-fault driver had been several miles away from the I-94 where she reportedly entered Telegraph Road heading in the incorrect direction. The accident has left a child without a mother and a community seeking answers amid the rubble of what once was routine Sunday morning.
