A student tragically lost his life after a shooting and stabbing incident following a high school basketball game in East Point, Georgia, school officials reported. In the wake of the violence that erupted Friday night after a game between Tri-Cities High School and Banneker High School, the community is reeling from the loss of tenth-grader Mario Bailey, who succumbed to gunshot wounds.
According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the school principal, Dr. Ethel Lett informed parents about the tragic event and stated, "You may see your child feeling sad, upset, angry, shocked, numb, or unsafe." Dr. Lett emphasized that additional measures were being implemented to bolster security, including the use of an Evolv concealed weapons detection system, and more Fulton County Schools Police Officers will be present on campus. In response to the crisis, the school is offering support for students through both in-person and virtual channels.
The incidents occurred near Tri-Cities High School shortly after the basketball game concluded. While the shooting took place away from school grounds, as East Point police were patrolling V F W Way, behind the high school, they heard gunshots and located a victim who was later identified as Bailey. He was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital but did not survive his injuries. Mario was reportedly leaving the game when the shooting, which stemmed from an argument with an unknown individual, occurred.
Simultaneously, a separate violent act transpired on campus grounds where a person was stabbed. The connection between the shooting and stabbing incidents remains unclear at this time, and the identity of the second victim has not been disclosed.
