The Lone Star State's fight against a tiny but formidable foe – the red flour beetle – continues, with the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) stepping up its game in Hockley County. According to FOX San Antonio, Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller has hammered home the state’s dedication to helping Levelland city officials bring the infestation under control.

The red flour beetle problem first made headlines in August 2023, and while some success was achieved during the colder months it's clear that warmer weather is bringing the pests back into the spotlight, therefore, TDA isn't resting on its laurels but is ramping up efforts to prevent another upsurge in beetle numbers, with Miller stating, "The Texas Department of Agriculture remains steadfast in our support for Hockley County," as FOX San Antonio reported.

Last fall saw the initiation of targeted spraying in Levelland, a strategy meant to keep the beetle population in check, but the approach requires specific weather conditions – temperatures above 50 degrees and wind speeds under 10 miles per hour. Such conditions are a rarity in the region of West Texas, making the fight against the beetle an uphill battle. The spray's effectiveness hinges on direct contact with the beetles, and this is one of the reasons why the TDA's monitoring with strategically placed traps is crucial, as noted in statements by FOX San Antonio.

These traps were deployed during the week of February 12 and are monitored weekly to determine their impact, and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service is also in on the effort, partnering with the TDA to deploy traps in the most affected areas; and "A red flour beetle infestation poses significant risks to stored grain supplies, leading to substantial economic losses for farmers and food distributors," warns Miller, "It is imperative that we take decisive action to mitigate such infestations and safeguard the integrity of our food supply" as the traps function as an early detection and response measure to tamp down the infestation, FOX San Antonio reports.

In solidarity with the TDA's actions, Commissioner Miller has been vocal about the department's unwavering commitment to supporting Hockley County, stating this commitment to protection against the detrimental impacts of the red flour beetle infestation; his statements were reiterated in coverage by the Levelland & Hockley County News-Press, echoing the determination of local and county officials and citizens alike in their communal battle against this agricultural threat.
