Longtime Wilmington resident and community advocate Theresa Morales has been reappointed to the Los Angeles Harbor Area Cemetery District by Supervisor Janice Hahn. Morales, who has been a trustee since 2018, will continue her role in maintaining the historic Wilmington Cemetery, a site established in 1857 by Phineas Banning, reports revealed.
A Wilmington local since 1968, Morales is a product of the neighborhood, having graduated from Phineas Banning High School and then earning an associate degree in history from Los Angeles Harbor College, Morales has been active in community service right from her days in high school. She has put her roots down in the area and has invested heavily in local civic responsibilities.
Supervisor Hahn expressed her confidence in Morales, stating, "The Historic Wilmington Cemetery is not only a sacred place for the families who have loved ones buried there, but a treasured part of Wilmington's history and heritage. We depend on the work of the District to maintain this special place, and Theresa has demonstrated her commitment to that goal," according to an announcement from the Los Angeles County government.
Morales' local involvement isn't limited to the Cemetery District. Her contributions include serving as a board member for Wilmington Pony Baseball and collaborating with the Wilmington Pilot Pop Warner Football League. These roles have affirmed her dedication, not just to the preservation of local history but to the vibrancy of the community's future as well.
Humbled by the reappointment, Morales commented, "I am honored to be reappointed by Supervisor Hahn to continue serving the county as a trustee with the Los Angeles Harbor Area Cemetery District. I would like to continue working both for and with the community, to ensure families continue to have the beautiful resting place they deserve," according to the official statement. Her renewed tenure is a testament to her longstanding commitment to the Los Angeles Harbor community and its historical sites.
