The only renal care facility in the small coastal town of Tillamook, Oregon, U.S. Renal Care, has declared it will shut down in less than a month, leaving its patients facing life-threatening challenges. According to KPTV, the impending closure is going to hit the 11 patients, who currently depend on the center's thrice-weekly dialysis services, hard—with the next closest facilities a treacherous two-hour drive away in either direction.

Sharon Gallino, one of the patients reliant on the soon-to-be-closed center, was reportedly stunned when she received the closure news during her regular treatment. “Everybody was just devastated that they would do that,” she told KPTV. For patients like her, dialysis is not just another medical appointment, but a lifeline that, if cut, can result in severe health deterioration or death within days.

Families affected have voiced their despair and see the center's closure as sealing the fate of their loved ones. Anita Hanakahi, another patient facing closure, expressed her fears to KOIN 6, “We were given 30 days in the dead of winter to find another way to do dialysis... And for a lot of us, what option do we have?”

U.S. Renal Care, acknowledging the closure, cited financial constraints as the primary cause. Brian Loveridge, Region Vice President of U.S. Renal Care, said in a statement, “Providing care in communities like Tillamook is a challenge many health care providers face as Medicare reimbursement has not kept up with the rising costs of operating a dialysis center,” as per North Coast Citizen. In addition, the local hospital, Adventist Health Tillamook, has already clarified that their facilities are not currently equipped to take over the service, leaving a critical gap in care until a sufficient solution emerges.

Despite the bleak outlook, Adventist Health Tillamook leadership is actively seeking alternatives to continue providing necessary dialysis care to their community. Still, with the closure date rapidly approaching, families and patients are left in limbo, wondering how they will cope with a medical system that is seemingly leaving them behind. As one spouse of a patient told KOIN 6, “I think they’re signing death certificates and they don’t care.” The clock is ticking for Tillamook's dialysis patients as they face an uncertain future.
