A devastating scene unfolded on a Miami highway early Friday morning when toddler twins were found dead in a parked car, and a woman believed to be the driver, leapt from an overpass, authorities said. The incident took place along the busy Golden Glades Interchange where Interstate 95 meets Florida's Turnpike.
Shortly after 2 a.m., Miami-Dade County Police received 911 calls reporting a boy and girl unresponsive in the backseat. While police and fire-rescue teams responded to the grisly find, the woman jumped from the overpass onto train tracks below, ABC News reported. Initially assisting, passersby were attempting CPR on the twins before officers arrived.
The children, both three years old, were rushed to the hospital where they were pronounced dead. Their names and the cause of their deaths have not been revealed. The woman was also taken to HCA Florida Aventura Hospital and was said to be in critical condition, as per CBS News.
Police closed the section of the highway during the investigation, which also affected Miami's commuter trains with delays reported. Tri-Rail established a bus bridge to connect the two closest stations given the impact on the underlying train tracks. Detective Andre Martin, carrying the weight of this tragedy as a law enforcement officer and a father, told CBS News, "Any case, any incident, such as this one that results in the death of a child is very, very difficult. My prayers are with the family of these children."
As the Miami-Dade police work to untangle this harrowing incident, the relationship between the woman and the toddlers is yet to be established. "Right now our investigators are working to piece this tragic incident together. There are many many questions that they have that they're working to find answers to," Martin concluded in a statement obtained by ABC News.
