Tragedy struck Chicago’s South Shore on a grim Monday afternoon as two young boys, ages 12 and 14, found themselves the target of gun violence, resulting in both being hospitalized with serious injuries. According to police, the boys were inside a car on the 7800 block of South Escanaba Avenue around 1:43 p.m. when a black sedan began to pursue them, and an occupant opened fire, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
After the shooting, the victims managed to escape their bullet-ridden Kia and seek refuge in the 7400 block of South Kenwood Avenue, two miles from the chaotic scene. Both boys were then taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, where the 14-year-old was listed in serious condition with a gunshot wound to the buttocks, and the 12-year-old, who was shot in the stomach, was reported to be in good condition, police said.
While the South Shore community was still reeling, a separate but related scene unfolded later that day. A standoff with a Chicago Police SWAT team occurred just a quarter-mile from the shooting, at a residence on the 7800 block of South Burnham Avenue. According to CBS Chicago, SWAT officials were heard via loudspeaker demanding the occupants to surrender, leading to several individuals exiting the house with hands raised. Two were subsequently handcuffed and detained.
Speaking to CBS Chicago's crew at the Grand Crossing, neighborhood resident Donnell Pelts, a father himself, expressed the community’s heartbreak: "Just devastation - I can't imagine a parent losing their kids out here," he said. "All I've got to say is like, man, you know, try to put down the guns or something. That's sad. I feel like breaking down." In the end, the police cleared the SWAT incident, although it remained unclear if any of those detained were directly involved in the shooting of the two boys, or how they might be connected.
The shootings and subsequent SWAT standoff have left the community searching for answers and peace, with authorities continuing their investigation. As of the latest reports, no one has been charged in connection with the shooting, and the events continue to unfold as the neighborhood grapples with yet another instance of senseless violence against its youngest members.
