Justice in America took a bow as Attorney General Merrick B. Garland gave nods of recognition to the legal eagles who've gone above and beyond. At a ceremony in Washington D.C., Garland doled out the prestigious Attorney General's Awards to a parade of Justice Department employees and other legal luminaries for 2022 and 2023, singling out over 800 nominees for their extraordinary work in upholding the nation's laws.

"Each of today's recipients has served with distinction, and in so doing, they have enabled the Justice Department to advance its work on behalf of the American people," Garland asserted as he praised the recipients, who have laid down the law across the country with their exceptional leadership and dedication. According to a Department of Justice announcement, Miami's own were not left out in the cold, securing a spot among the honored.

U.S. Attorney Markenzy Lapointe for the Southern District of Florida couldn't hide his pride, boasting about the home team's performance. "We are incredibly proud of our Southern District of Florida staff members who were recognized today with an Attorney General's Award," Lapointe stated, as their diligent efforts in the fight against fraud, protection of civil rights, and the voice they've given to the victimized, were called out for their community impact.

Among the honored was a dynamic duo from the Southern District of Florida, Assistant U.S. Attorneys Brooke C. Watson and Nicole Grosnoff, who bagged the Attorney General’s Award for Fraud Prevention for their relentless pursuit of fraud and white-collar villainy in the year 2022. Alongside a colleague from the Southern District of New York, this squad, including hot shots from the FBI, FDIC, and more, was highlighted for their hard-nosed approach to sniffing out corruption and bringing crooks to justice.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Veronica Harrell James continued the trend of Floridian legal prowess, scooping up a Distinguished Service award in 2023 for her tenacious work in the Southern District, noted for the company she kept alongside a Deputy Chief and other key players from the Civil Rights Division. Not to be outshone, her colleagues Assistant U.S. Attorneys Laura Thomas Rivero and Michael Brenner nabbed a John Marshall Award for their performance in the appellate courts, no doubt adding to the Sunshine State's tally of legal victories and esteemed recognitions that speak volumes to their commitment to legal excellence.
