The shutdown, slated to begin at 9 p.m. and last until Monday at 5 a.m., will see the installation of steel beams for the first of four new flyover ramps at the nexus, as reported by FOX San Antonio.
A stretch of Vance Jackson Road also will be closed on the same weekend but only from 9 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Saturday, TxDOT says this will be the third consecutive weekend of closures, and while the long-term benefits promise eased congestion, speedier commutes and enhanced safety, commuters are currently grappling with considerable inconvenience. The closures affect the east and westbound main lanes of IH-10 from UTSA Boulevard to La Cantera Parkway, the east and westbound main lanes of Loop 1604 from Vance Jackson Road to La Cantera Parkway, and the east and westbound Loop 1604 frontage roads between the I-10 east and westbound frontage roads according to a piece by Express News.
For drivers navigating these closures, TxDOT has outlined several detours: eastbound IH-10 traffic should exit at La Cantera Parkway and use the frontage road to re-enter post-interchange while, westbound travelers should use the IH-10 frontage road post-UTSA Boulevard to re-enter the main lanes past the Loop 1604 interchange. Loop 1604 eastbound motorists need to detour at Vance Jackson, make a U-turn at UTSA Boulevard, and re-enter Loop 1604 mainlanes, for those westbound on Loop 1604, the suggested route is exiting at the IH-10 exit ramp, u-turning at La Cantera Parkway and subsequently re-entering the Loop 1604 westbound lanes.
TxDOT has encouraged drivers to plan for alternative routes or completely avoid the interchange if possible and local law enforcement will be helping to direct traffic during the closures "This is a full weekend closure and these lanes are expected to remain closed for the full duration," TxDOT emphasized in statements obtained by Express News stressing the scope and persistence of this project's weekend impacts on San Antonio commuters.
