Following a tense manhunt that involved the community's help, fugitive Steven William Skalij is now in custody. Skalij was sought by authorities on two counts of Sexual Assault of a Child, with a bond totaling $1.5 million, according to the White Settlement Police Department.
Previously released by the WSPD in October 2023 for a similar charge, Skalij had agreed to surrender after recent media coverage spotlighted his case starting last Wednesday. However, despite the agreement, he failed to present himself to law enforcement on the appointed days, Thursday and Friday. The public became a crucial asset in this pursuit, with officials urging anyone with information concerning Skalij's whereabouts to come forward.
In a concerted effort to apprehend the suspect, WSPD had turned to social media, broadcasting a call for assistance on their Facebook page on February 3. The department's post outlined the seriousness of the allegations against Skalij and provided contact details for tips from the public.
Concerned citizens were provided with various contact methods, including an email address, [email protected], and phone numbers for both the WSPD and Tarrant County Crime Stoppers. The latter, which allows individuals to offer information anonymously, can be reached at 817-469-TIPS. The community-centric approach to Skalij's capture underscores the power of public involvement in aiding law enforcement efforts.
With Skalij now in custody, the attention turns to the judicial system, where he will face the consequences of his alleged actions. The details surrounding his apprehension have not been disclosed yet, but what is clear is the role that media coverage and responsive citizens played in bringing this phase of the manhunt to a close.
