A tragic car crash near Bay City has left one woman dead and a teenager fighting for their life in hospital. The fatal collision, suspected to involve alcohol intoxication by one of the drivers, occurred late Sunday evening.
According to ABC12, the Hampton Township Department of Public Safety responded to the crash on Hampton Road sometime around 9:30 p.m. There they found a two-vehicle accident that would quickly turn fatal for a 52-year-old Essexville woman who was pronounced dead at the hospital. A teenage passenger in her car remains in critical condition.
The driver of the other involved vehicle, a 44-year-old Essexville man, was treated for his injuries and released. However, he was shortly arrested under suspicion of drunken driving, a factor believed to play a part in the accident's tragic outcome. The names of those involved have not yet been released to the public. As he has not yet appeared in court for arraignment, police are keeping the suspect’s identity under wraps.
An official statement by the Hampton Township Public Safety Department confirmed the incident, noting the ongoing investigation "with assist from Michigan State Police." They acknowledged the collaborative response involving not only their own personnel but also the assistance of the Fire Division, Portsmouth Fire Department, and MedStar to urgently transport the victims to the Emergency Room.
