A woman is dead after her car was struck by a Brightline train in Pompano Beach, with Broward County Sheriff's Office deputies and Pompano Beach Fire Rescue responding to the fatal collision near Atlantic Boulevard and Dixie Highway around 9:35 p.m., Tuesday night, according to CBS News Miami.
Deputies found the automobile, with the woman driver already deceased; no detail on the woman's identity has been released, and despite the violent encounter that mangled the white Lexus, no other injuries were reported in the incident that has once again cast a somber shadow over Brightline's safety record, this is a company that has seen a troubling number of deaths associated with its rail service since it began operating in 2017.
CBS News Miami footage revealed significant damage to the Lexus following the collision while WSVN reported that local officials have been grappling with the unsettling frequency of such incidents, with cars, too often, trying to beat Brightline's high-speed trains at crossings.
The grim tally of fatalities linked to Brightline, which, according to the Associated Press, numbers over 100 since its launch, highlights an issue that Ryan, who witnessed the tragic event, summarized saying, “You don’t have to be so close, you know, a few seconds until the train is over to get wherever it is you need to go," he told WSVN, “It’s not worth your life.” yet despite such advice and multiple safety campaigns invested in by Brightline and local governments there remains a concerning pattern of deaths that has not abated.
