A pedestrian was left in critical condition after being hit by a car in Warren, Michigan, on Tuesday morning, officials said. The 39-year-old woman was struck around 7 a.m. on 10 Mile at Hoover Road by a driver in a Saturn Vue turning northbound into a center lane, The Detroit News reports.
Following the collision, the driver got out to render aid, and the Warren Fire Department transported the victim to St. John Hospital, where she remains in critical condition, according to police. The victim reportedly had been standing in the road, wearing dark clothes, attempting to cross against the signal before being hit — a risky move that had other drivers swerving to avoid her, "police said in a statement" obtained by The Detroit News.
Investigators on the scene did not find immediate evidence of distracted driving by the motorist, who stayed on site and cooperated fully with the investigation. As reported by FOX 2 Detroit, Warren Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer emphasized that the ongoing investigation will look into whether drugs or alcohol were involved.
Additional accounts by eyewitnesses supported the notion that the victim was an obstruction in the path of vehicles, forcing multiple drivers to navigate around her before the accident, CBS News Detroit reported.
