In the early hours of a chilly February morning, Worcester's very own men in blue apprehended a young man suspected of trying his luck on other people's property. According to a press release from the Worcester Police Department, officers were stationed at the Girl’s Inc lot on Providence Street, where they spotted two ski-masked figures prowling in the night.
The duo caught the law's attention around 2:24 a.m., February 24, when they decided to test the locks of a gray Jeep, prompting the vehicle to cry out an alarm into the night, and in response, they tried to blend into the dark, walking quickly away and then halting at the sight of the officer's cruiser, this choreography of guilt didn't go unnoticed, abruptly they crossed the street, vanishing into the urban scape. An officer on the scene managed to track down one of them, an 18-year-old named Albert Kariuki, who was found on Heywood Street, and upon confronting bright blues of police lights, he claimed to have been with a mate named "Lenny," a ghost in this narrative, as he was never found.
The shadowed ballet of potential crime came to a stop when Kariuki was arrested after the other units reinforced the scene, allowing for the initial patrol to return to the Jeep's resting spot, confirming suspicions. The Worcester Police Department's release clearly states, "Mr. Kariuki was placed under arrest for Breaking & Entering into a Motor Vehicle in the Nighttime," ending his brief flirtation with lawlessness.
It's a stark reminder that the cover of night offers no sure sanctuary for those tempted by the belongings of others, and as proof that Worcester's night watch stands vigilant, the heart of the city beats more securely with the knowledge that its guardians are ever-present, the streets might be a bit safer for the folks in Worcester—thanks to the eyes that don't sleep, and the hands that never tire in keeping watch.
