The Tennessee State Fire Marshal's Office and the Department of Commerce & Insurance have stepped up for local heroes, delivering a $3 million lifeline to 104 rescue squads across the Volunteer State. This substantial backing, confirmed by a recent announcement from Tennessee Newsroom, comes courtesy of the Rescue Squad Grant Program, inaugurated in 2022 by Governor Bill Lee and the General Assembly with the intent to equip these squads for their life-or-death missions.
According to the Tennessee Newsroom announcement, the cash injection is designated for the acquisition of critical gear that will assure incident response effectiveness and shield first responders in the line of duty. The necessity of such funding was clear, given the $2 million doled out last year in similar grants to qualifying applicants. It's evident that the funding is not only anticipated but also needed. "It’s an honor to provide resources to Tennessee’s rescue squads and help fulfill Governor Lee's vision of strengthening Tennessee’s rural communities," said Carter Lawrence, the Tennessee State Fire Marshal and TDCI Commissioner.
The grants are not handed out willy-nilly; a diligent application process was set in motion between January 8 and February 8, during which the State Fire Marshal's Office received a substantial 126 applications from across the state. The robust vetting procedure involved internal scoring and a committee's oversight, comprised of six representation from the Tennessee Rescue Squad Association and the Assistant Commissioner of Fire Prevention from TDCI.
Tennessee rescue squads are the unsung heroes performing tasks like extrication, structural collapse response, and swift water rescue, their expertise often spells the difference between life and death in the hair's breadth of emergency circumstances. "Tennessee rescue squads provide valuable lifesaving services in their communities, and it is crucial that they have the equipment they need to safely complete their missions," Assistant Commissioner for Fire Prevention Gary Farley confirmed in a statement that resonated with the grant recipients’ sentiments, congratulating them on their awards and wishing them ongoing success and safety.
