A 71-year-old woman is left battling for her life after a harrowing encounter with a car in a Whole Foods parking lot in Dedham yessterday morning. According to Dedham Police spokespeople, the distress call at Legacy Place was received at around 10:30 a.m. as first reported by NBC Boston, setting off a chain of events that led to the woman being pinned beneath a vehicle.
The extent of the woman's injuries were not disclosed, but the urgency with which medical attention was sought suggests a dire situation. She was transported to a local hospital quickly to undergo evaluation and treatment for injuries that police believe to be serious. The victim's condition, however, remains unknown.
As per protocol, the investigation is to be led by Dedham police, supported by Massachusetts State Police’s Crime Scene Services and Collision Analysis and Reconstruction units, alongside the Norfolk County District Attorney’s office, a detail shared by both media sources.
An unsuspecting witness, Dawn Fraser, happened upon the harrowing scene. A nurse by profession, Fraser had just finished a workout session and was headed to get coffee when she noticed the victim lying motionless under the vehicle. Fraser told Boston 25 News, "I saw what I thought was a coat underneath of a car, like a Jeep but no movement and the guy was kinda looking under like wa-what and then I saw a leg out, and he’s like she’s under there and I’m like ‘There’s a person under there!'"
During the tragedy, the driver remained at the scene while the woman received emergency care and was taken to a hospital. The events leading up to the accident, including whether the driver will receive any citations, were still under investigation on Thursday afternoon.
