The Arizona Department of Transportation is paving the way for better roads and bridges with its latest Tentative Five-Year Construction Program for 2025-2029, focusing heavily on upgrading its pavement and expanding major corridors, the department is opening the floor for public comment on the proposed projects estimated to cost about $7.9 billion over the next five years.

According to the ADOT's announcement, the plans highlight more than $2.4 billion dedicated to improving the pavement quality and bridge infrastructure in greater Arizona regions, outside the realms of Maricopa and Pima counties, setting aside an average of around $600 million per year to maintain, rehabilitate, or altogether replace numerous stretches of pavement and bridges across the state including $508 million for interstate upgrades and $690 million for other route improvements, that focuses on routes like US 93 and state routes such as 64 and 260.

In addition to the hefty investments in pavement, the program positions $685 million for projects aimed at heightening highway safety and functionality, these include adding smart technology, shaping intersection improvements and appending shoulders on roads. Notably, $495 million is put aside to widen highways and refurbish interchanges, slated projects include transforming the Interstate 40/US 93 West Kingman Interchange and bolstering US 93 to accommodate more traffic between Wickenburg and I-40 in Kingman by turning stretches of it into four lanes.

The urban areas of Maricopa County are looking at substantial construction pursuits in partnership with the Maricopa Association of Governments, accounting for $2.5 billion in investments, targets such as widening the Interstate 10 from Phoenix to Casa Grande to improve vehicular flow and the extension of Loop 303 to bridge connections between various mainstays have each been marked for commencement, and the project setting out to reconstruct the intersection where US 60 clashes with 35th Avenue and Indian School Road which aims to segregate the cross traffic to streamline passage and augment safety, these are just a few slices of the overhaul pie set for serving up." The Pima County projects majorly consist of I-10 improvements, including a newly envisioned I-10 and Country Club Road interchange and the broadening of I-10 itself, pinned for initiation in 2025.

Citizens and stakeholders are encouraged by ADOT to lend their voices to the pending program, with opinions and inputs welcome through an online form, by email at [email protected], or even over the phone by calling 855.712.8530, the public comment period is earmarked to wind up at 5 p.m. Friday, May 24, followed by the State Transportation Board's decisive meeting on June 21 to consider the final program. An additional hearing is slated for May 17 where verbal comments can be made, and further details on the meeting can be found at aztransportationboard.gov.
