An Atlanta culinary mainstay, Mary Mac's Tea Room, faces a hurdle in its long history after a roof collapse caused by a severe storm this week left the establishment temporarily shuttered. As crews worked to clean up the aftermath that spilled onto the bustling Ponce de Leon Avenue, the restaurant pledged to bounce back swiftly. According to a statement obtained by WSBTV, a spokesperson from Mary Mac's stated they will "reopen as quickly as possible," although a definitive timetable for the revival remains unannounced.
Firefighters were first on the scene at the prominent Midtown eatery during the early hours yesterday, responding to the structural failure above the Skyline dining room. Despite the grim sight of bricks, wood, and glass strewn across the sidewalk, reported by Channel 2 Action News, injuries were miraculously absent. Mary Mac's affirmed in a statement to FOX 5 the damage was confined to a section of the restaurant, sparing the majority of the venue. Locals and longtime patrons, reeling from the news, expressed their dismay and support as the establishment announced on Instagram its temporary closure for repairs.
The outpouring of community solidarity proved to be a silver lining for the management and staff at Mary Mac's. The spokesperson shared with FOX 5 the "overwhelming" support is propelling the team's efforts to resume operations. The aim is to "continue Mary Mac's legacy of southern food and hospitality for years to come." First to dine there in the 70s, nearby resident John Black relayed to FOX 5 his attachment to the Tea Room, an iconic spot reflecting the city's dining heritage.
As the cleanup and restoration efforts carried on, Mary Mac's honored the city's first responders and Georgia Power crews for their assistance at the scene, recognized in their social media updates. The restaurant, with roots stretching back to 1945 and a track record of hosting notables such as President Jimmy Carter and the late Congressman John Lewis, stands as the last of its kind in Atlanta. According to Channel 2's Bryan Mims, the staff at Mary Mac's remains hopeful, and promises to keep the public informed on the progress and the eventual re-opening.
