Get ready to shell out more green for parking at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport's two main garages starting April Fools' Day—though this hike is no joke. In response to a surge in demand, the Red and Blue garages' daily rates are set for an increase on Monday. According to KXAN, travelers will see Red Garage rates jump from $29 to $32 a day, and the Blue Garage from $19 a day to $23. However, the economy parking price remains at a steady $12 daily rate.
Last year, the airport saw more than 22 million passengers, setting a new record. This bump in rates is considered a strategy to manage the "increased demand" for on-site parking, as stated by AUS officials. Austin’s increasing popularity as a travel destination, especially during holidays and special events, has parking facilities often operating at or near full capacity, the release obtained by KXAN explained.
The price hike is also a financial fuelling for the Journey With AUS expansion program, of which a new West Parking Garage is a key component. The revenue from the raised rates is earmarked for funding these extensive development plans aimed at enhancing the airport's capacity and facilities.
Not an isolated incidence, the decision to increase rates at AUS aligns with trends at other major airports following the industry's rebound from COVID-19. A report by FOX 7 Austin noted that the hike comes amidst higher demand for on-site parking and provided a comparative context with pricing strategies at similar hubs post-pandemic.
