Officials at Austin Community College District (ACC) are weighing a big move to make higher education more accessible — but they're not rushing the decision. In a move that could alter the playing field of college affordability in Central Texas, ACC trustees are pumping the brakes on a ground-breaking initiative. This proposed plan could potentially offer free tuition to high school graduates starting with the class of 2024, but the board is calling for additional review to ensure feasibility and longevity.
"This is an exciting, complicated conversation," Dr. Barbara P. Mink, ACC Board of Trustees Chair, said, according to a newsroom post on the college's website. Ironing out the details for such an ambitious program isn't easy, with Mink adding, "A program of this magnitude takes time. We are going to be thoughtful about every aspect to ensure any plan we launch is sustainable, scalable, and centered on academic success, social equity, and economic development." Although the sentiment is clear, affirming due diligence can be just as important as the intention behind the move, according to Austin Community College District.
"We've moved very quickly, and I want to thank the board for their guidance and thoughtful consideration to make sure we get it right," Dr. Russell Lowery-Hart, ACC Chancellor told the newsroom. Empathizing with the financial struggles of prospective students, he emphasized, "It's not about getting students in the door. It's about eliminating barriers so that they not only come, they persist, they graduate, and they enter our local workforce with the skills and talents our community needs."
Data paints a stark picture, with 57% of high school graduates in Central Texas not enrolling in post-secondary education post-graduation in 2023. Affordability played the villain, with many application starters at ACC indicating tuition was the barricade in their educational journey. Set to benefit those graduating high school or completing their GED after July 1, 2023, the proposed pilot program promises up to three years of free tuition as early as this fall, as per Austin Community College District.
