An Austin police sergeant is set to embark on an 87-mile endurance run for charity, an endeavor that promises to test human resilience and the spirit of giving. Sgt. Ben Mewis of the Austin Police Department is no stranger to long-distance feats. He has previously pounded the pavement over vast Texas landscapes to support various charitable causes. This Monday, according to FOX 7 Austin, he will take the route from Enchanted Rock to the Capitol to benefit the Austin Boxer Rescue, an organization close to the sergeant’s heart.
Mewis’s commitment to charity and physical challenges has seen him complete runs from historic Texas landmarks to the capitol, raising money for those in need. This time, he has chosen to support a cause that has personally touched his family's life. "Mewis says he chose the Austin Boxer Rescue because his family adopted two dogs from them in the past, named Comet and Mr. Hoss," explained FOX 7. Mewis is scheduled to quickly set off from Enchanted Rock State Natural Area on the morning of March 18th, with the hope to arrive at the Capitol the following morning.

The Austin Police Association has thrown its support behind Mewis, showing the power of community and camaraderie. In a statement released on its X page, the association encouraged the public to closely watch and cheer on Mewis during his athletic and charitable endeavors. "We plan to have a link where you can follow SGT Mewis during this run and hope you can come support him and Austin Boxer Rescue upon his arrival at the Capitol," the APA promulgated.
For those inclined to support Mewis, updates on his run will be forthcoming on the APA’s social media pages. The challenge is not merely a physical one but a testament to Mewis’s dedication to bettering the lives of dogs who have, in his own life, proved to be more than just pets but members of the family. According to the Austin Police Association's tweet, this dedicated sergeant runs not only to raise funds but to also deeply honor a bond forged between human and animal – a bond indelible and worthy of every sweat-drenched mile that will stretch out before him on the long road from Enchanted Rock to Austin’s Capitol.
