Tragedy struck on North Mopac Boulevard last week when a pedestrian was fatally hit by a vehicle. The Austin Police Department reported the accident occurred on March 14th at around 7:58 p.m. in the 9800 block of the roadway. Despite emergency services' best efforts, the pedestrian was declared dead at the scene.
The driver involved in the crash stayed to fully cooperate with the police, who found no immediate signs of impairment. As the authorities continue to thoroughly investigate, this incident marks the city's 15th traffic-related fatality this year. In a stark comparison, by this date last year, Austin had witnessed 22 deadly incidents, amounting to 22 lost lives.
The ongoing investigation by APD's Vehicular Homicide unit aims to uncover the details leading up to the unfortunate event. Officials have not yet released the identities of those involved as they seek to respect the privacy of the deceased and allow relatives time to be notified.
