Gunplay in Dorchester ended with police nabbing a 23-year-old suspect from Mattapan after a heated foot chase yesterday morning. The Boston Police Department's Anti-Crime Unit officers, working out of District B-3, apprehended Jaraiel Wiggins on gun-related charges at approximately 10:27 a.m., officials said.
According to the official report released by the Boston Police Department, plainclothes officers were executing a firearm investigation near Corbet Street and Evans Street when they tried to approach the suspect. Wiggins, apparently spooked by the officers, darted across the street without regard for oncoming traffic, prompting the officers to give chase.
The officers managed to catch up to Wiggins and, in the scuffle that followed near 50 Corbet Street, they recovered a Smith and Wesson M&P Shield. The firearm was reportedly loaded with one round in the chamber and seven rounds in the magazine. The pursuit and subsequent arrest by the vigilant officers added another illegal firearm seizure to the department's efforts to curb the city's ongoing gun violence issues.
Wiggins now faces charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and trespassing, as per the Boston Police Department's statement. His capture, which occurred amidst the morning hustle of a usually quiet neighborhood, demonstrates the relentless work of the Boston Police Department in maintaining the safety of community members. Wiggins is expected to be arraigned shortly in Dorchester District Court, where the legal system will take its course.
