A former high school teacher is behind bars, facing allegations of sexual misconduct with an underage student in Buckeye, Arizona. Alyssa Todd, 23, who worked at Odyssey Institute for Advanced and International Studies High School, was arrested on Wednesday after authorities received a tip-off from her husband about the suspect relationship.
The initial probe began March 16 when the husband reported discovering handwritten letters, which he described as sexual in nature, hidden in Todd's drawer, according to 12 News. More evidence was later found on Todd’s laptop. In addition to the letters, Todd is said to have admitted in police custody that she told the 15-year-old boy she "would leave her husband" for him.
During their investigation, police reviewed messages between Todd and the student, uncovering allegations of sexual abuse occurring both on and off campus over a period of two months, according to an interview by AZFamily. Todd is being held on a $75,000 bond and is charged with luring a minor for sexual exploitation, sexual exploitation of a minor, and sexual conduct with a minor.
This isn't an isolated incident for the high school; Todd’s arrest marks the third such case involving female educators and minors in Buckeye in less than a year. There was also 42-year-old Jessica Kramer, who faced similar allegations with a 17-year-old student in September of the preceding year. "Sexual predators come in all shapes and sizes," Buckeye Police Public Information Officer Carissa Planalp stated, underscoring the urgency for parental vigilance in their children's communications and relationships. Todd has been terminated from her teaching position, confirmed by Odyssey Family of Schools.
As the community grapples with these arrests, Planalp highlighted a silver lining: that these crimes are being reported. Todd is scheduled for her next court appearance on Wednesday. Any further developments or details on the case have not been reported.
