A tragic mishap on Monday evening has left the Canby High School community in shock after senior Mason Warshaw was fatally struck by a freight train while crossing the tracks. The incident occurred just north of the Pine Street intersection, Canby Police Chief Jorge Tro confirmed, as reported by KPIC.

Warshaw, 18, was pronounced dead at the scene after the northbound train collided with him around 6:35 p.m., according to police. The tragic, event appeared to be accidental, Tro stated, with an ongoing investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the crash. The Pine Street crossing, located near the Clackamas County Fairgrounds, is reportedly not within Canby's downtown quiet zone. Officials were told that the train's horn was sounded as it neared the intersection.

In the wake of this incident, condolences have poured in for the student's bereaved family. Dr. Aaron Downs, Canby School District Superintendent, expressed the district's sorrow in a letter to families obtained by KTVZ, stating, "Our district counselors and psychologists are available to students throughout the day today. If you have any concerns about your student’s reactions to this loss, please feel free to contact your child’s teachers, the school counselors, or the administrative staff. Thank you for your concern and well wishes."

The school district is extending its support to those affected by the tragedy, including Warshaw's classmates and Canby High School's faculty and staff members. "We also offer condolences to our Canby High School students and staff members, especially Mason’s classmates, teachers, and support staff," Downs noted. Professionals have been made available to assist students in coping with their grief, according to information from KOIN.
