A Colorado man has been handed a hefty prison sentence for his violent actions during the infamous January 6 Capitol riot, which aimed to disrupt the 2020 presidential election certification, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Jeffrey Sabol, 53, was sentenced to 63 months behind bars and faces another 36 months of supervised release after being convicted of multiple felonies including assaulting law enforcement officers with a dangerous weapon and obstructing an official proceeding.
U.S. District Judge Rudolph Contreras ordered Sabol to pay $32,165.65 in restitution following his conviction from a stipulated bench trial on August 18, 2023, where court documents indicated he had prepared for potential violence by bringing a helmet, a trauma kit, a buck knife, and zip ties, before traveling from Colorado to Washington, D.C., for the "Stop the Steal" rally with other members of a so-called "neighborhood watch" group.
The chaos unfolded when Sabol, separated from his group, forced himself to the front line against law enforcement on the Capitol grounds, escalating to a point where he and others were battling officers in the Tunnel, an area that saw one of the most severe confrontations, the statement detailed. His aggressive efforts included snatching a police baton with such force that it lifted the officer's torso off the ground and propelled Sabol backward down the steps of the Lower West Terrace.
In the aftermath of the breach, Sabol attempted to cover his tracks by deleting text messages from his cell phone and destroying his laptop in a microwave, the evidence also pointed to a botched effort to flee the U.S. for Switzerland but after failing to board his flight, Sabol was nabbed by the FBI on January 11, 2021, while he was en route to Westchester, New York, in a rented car.
