Sworn in on January 1, 2018, Brown has the distinction of being the first African-American Sheriff of Dallas County and joins the ranks of only three African-American female sheriffs in the United States, as highlighted by the Dallas County Sheriff's Department.
Kicking off her trailblazing career in law enforcement in 1988 with the Duncanville Police Department, Brown was the department's first African-American female hire. Climbing the ranks, she became a sergeant in 1993, commanding a role in the Patrol Division at the onset. She later spearheaded the Community Oriented Policing Task Force, introducing initiatives like Citizens on Patrol and the Duncanville Police Beat television program.
