Chicago's airports are bracing for a massive influx of spring break travelers, with the Chicago Department of Aviation anticipating 2.9 million passengers to pass through O'Hare and Midway International Airports from March 21 to April 1, the city's website reported. Mayor Brandon Johnson hailed the preparedness and efforts of airport staff to provide "a safe and welcoming experience" as Chicago becomes the go-to destination for many during the holiday season.
With passenger numbers set to increase 7% at O’Hare and 2.4% at Midway compared to last year, city officials urge travelers to consider public transportation options like the CTA Blue and Orange Lines or using the 'Kiss n’ Fly' drop-offs to curb traffic jams, the Mayor said, "This surge in travel to Chicago is no surprise, and our airports help make each journey memorable for visitors," according to the release. On the security front, the CDA is on a hiring spree with 85 Aviation Security Officer positions open, a move likely to bolster safety measures at both airports amid the traffic surge.
Travelers are also advised to arrive early due to expected longer wait times at TSA and CBP checkpoints; updates on checkpoint waiting times are available in real time on the FlyChicago website. For those looking for quicker passage, CLEAR lanes are an option at O'Hare's Terminal 5 and Terminals 1 and 2, as well as at Midway, "Whether travelers are visiting family for springtime holidays or enjoying a well-deserved vacation, we’re thrilled to provide them with a safe and efficient travel experience at Chicago’s airports," CDA Commissioner Jamie L. Rhee stated in the announcement.
Meanwhile, the airports are also setting the stage for a festive atmosphere with the #ChiOnTheFly series featuring live performances and appearances by characters like the Easter Bunny for the amusement of passengers, and for spiritual sustenance, the interfaith chapels at both airports will host Catholic Masses and Protestant services during Holy Week and Easter Sunday, "From new concessions and amenities for the traveling public to exciting new destinations on offer from our air carrier partners, O'Hare and Midway are ready to welcome the millions of passengers we expect to see over the next 12 days," Rhee remarked, according to the city's press release.
In the realm of air service, O’Hare and Midway are witnessing an aggressive expansion with new international flights to destinations like Hong Kong, Tulum, and Athens and increased service to Canadian cities like Winnipeg and Quebec City as well as nine new routes by Frontier Airlines at O'Hare detailed in a Chicago Department of Aviation report. On the ground, the airports are tempting travelers with new food concessions like Half Moon Empanadas and retailers like ChiBoys and Hudson Nonstop, deepening the richness of Chicago's air gateways not just as transit hubs but as places of encounter and exchange.
Lastly, supporting those who serve, the renovated USO Center at Midway, now with increased capacity and improved facilities stands as a testament to the city's commitment to caring for military service members and their families in transit, a gracious nod to the bravest who travel through its portals.
